Protect your Miami business VoIP system from toll fraud, eavesdropping, and denial-of-service attacks. Essential VoIP security guide.

VoIP phone systems introduce unique security risks that Miami businesses often overlook. Toll fraud — where attackers hijack your VoIP system to make calls at your expense, often to expensive international numbers — can result in thousands of dollars in unauthorized charges overnight. VoIP eavesdropping, denial-of-service attacks targeting your communications, and account compromise are also real threats. VoIP security requires specific configurations and monitoring.

Toll Fraud Prevention

Toll fraud is the most common VoIP attack targeting Miami businesses. Attackers gain access to your VoIP system (typically through weak admin passwords or open SIP ports) and make large volumes of international calls that appear on your bill. Prevention measures include: strong, unique passwords for all SIP accounts and admin portals; disabling international calling for users who don't need it; setting per-account calling limits with automatic alerts when thresholds are exceeded; blocking calls to high-risk destinations; and monitoring call logs for unusual patterns.

Network Security for VoIP

Your VoIP system should be on a dedicated VLAN (Virtual LAN) separated from your general business data network. This isolation means that if another device on your network is compromised, attackers can't easily pivot to your VoIP infrastructure. Your firewall should allow only the specific ports and protocols needed for your VoIP traffic, block all other inbound VoIP traffic, and use SIP inspection to detect and block malformed or malicious SIP traffic. Regular firewall rule audits help ensure VoIP security controls remain effective.

Encryption for VoIP Communications

Unencrypted VoIP calls can be intercepted using freely available tools. For Miami businesses that discuss sensitive information on calls — client data, financial information, legal matters, medical information — SRTP (Secure Real-time Transport Protocol) encryption ensures calls can't be eavesdropped by someone on the same network or internet path. Most modern UCaaS platforms encrypt calls by default, but verify your configuration and ensure all devices use encrypted connections.
