CMMC Compliance Guide for Miami Defense Contractors
Understanding CMMC requirements for Miami-area defense contractors and federal vendors. Learn which level you need and how to achieve compliance.
The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) is the Department of Defense's framework for ensuring defense contractors adequately protect Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). Miami-area companies that work with the DoD — whether manufacturing, professional services, IT, engineering, or logistics — must achieve and maintain appropriate CMMC certification. With CMMC 2.0 now in effect, many South Florida defense contractors are working to understand what's required of them.
CMMC 2.0 Levels Explained
CMMC 2.0 has three levels. Level 1 (Foundational) requires 17 basic cybersecurity practices from NIST SP 800-171 and is satisfied through annual self-assessment. Level 2 (Advanced) requires all 110 NIST SP 800-171 practices and applies to contractors handling CUI — this level requires either a self-assessment or third-party assessment depending on the specific contract. Level 3 (Expert) requires NIST SP 800-172 practices and applies to contractors on the most sensitive DoD programs, requiring government-led assessments.
Most Common CMMC Gaps for Miami Contractors
Miami defense contractors typically have gaps in: multi-factor authentication (required for all access to systems processing CUI), system and communications protection (encryption requirements), audit logging and monitoring, incident response planning, media protection for portable devices, and configuration management. Many South Florida contractors are also surprised to learn that CMMC requirements flow down to subcontractors — if you subcontract work under a DoD prime contract, your subcontractors may also need CMMC certification.
Planning Your CMMC Journey
CMMC compliance is a multi-phase process: assess your current state against NIST SP 800-171 requirements, develop a System Security Plan (SSP) documenting your CUI environment and controls, create a Plan of Action and Milestones (POAM) for gaps, implement remediation, and then pursue assessment. Infinity Network Support has CMMC-RP registered practitioners who can guide Miami defense contractors through this process from initial assessment to certification readiness.
