Level 2 (Advanced) requires all 110 NIST SP 800-171 practices and applies to contractors handling CUI — this level requires either a self-assessment or third-party assessment depending on the specific contract. Level 3 (Expert) requires NIST SP 800-172 practices and applies to contractors on the most sensitive DoD programs, requiring government-led assessments.
