The First 90 Days with a Managed IT Provider: What to Expect and How to Maximize Value
Switching to a managed IT provider is a major business decision. Here is exactly what should happen in the first three months — and the red flags to watch for if it is not going according to plan.
Bringing on a managed IT provider (MSP) is one of the most impactful operational decisions a growing business can make. But like any significant relationship, the first 90 days set the tone for everything that follows. Here is what a high-quality onboarding experience looks like — and the warning signs that your provider is not delivering.
Days 1–30: Discovery and Documentation
A professional MSP begins with a comprehensive IT audit: inventorying every device, mapping network infrastructure, documenting software licenses, and reviewing existing security policies. By the end of month one, your provider should deliver a written IT asset inventory and a prioritized list of critical issues discovered.
- Complete hardware and software inventory
- Network diagram and documentation
- Security gap assessment with severity ratings
- Backup verification — confirming your data is actually recoverable
- Password and credential audit
Days 31–60: Remediation and Baseline Security
Month two focuses on fixing what the discovery phase uncovered. Critical vulnerabilities — unpatched systems, weak passwords, misconfigured firewalls — should be addressed first. Your MSP should also be deploying their monitoring stack: RMM (remote monitoring and management) agents on endpoints, backup solutions, and security software.
Baseline security that should be in place by day 60
- Multi-factor authentication on all cloud accounts
- Endpoint detection and response (EDR) on all devices
- Centralized patch management with documented cadence
- Automated backup with verified restore tests
- Email security filtering for phishing and malware
Days 61–90: Optimization and Communication Rhythm
The third month shifts from fixing problems to building the partnership. You should receive your first monthly report covering uptime, patch status, backup health, and any incidents resolved. A good MSP schedules a quarterly business review (QBR) to align IT priorities with your business goals.
Red Flags in the First 90 Days
- No written documentation delivered after the first month
- Reactive-only support with no proactive monitoring alerts
- No backup testing or verification
- Unclear billing with surprise charges
- No single point of contact for your account
- MFA not implemented by day 60
