NIST Cybersecurity Framework for Miami Small Businesses

Learn how to apply the NIST Cybersecurity Framework to improve security at your Miami small business. Practical steps for each CSF function.

The NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) is the most widely used security framework globally, originally designed for critical infrastructure but now adopted by organizations of all sizes. For Miami small businesses that want a structured approach to improving cybersecurity without starting from scratch, the NIST CSF provides a practical roadmap. Its five core functions — Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, and Recover — map cleanly to activities Miami businesses should be doing regardless of formal compliance requirements.

NIST CSF: Identify

The Identify function requires understanding your environment to manage cybersecurity risk. For Miami businesses, this means maintaining a complete asset inventory (every computer, server, mobile device, and application), understanding what sensitive data you hold and where it's stored, documenting your key business processes and their technology dependencies, assessing your current security posture through a risk assessment, and understanding your supply chain risk — the vendors and service providers who could affect your security.

NIST CSF: Protect and Detect

The Protect function covers implementing safeguards: access controls, security awareness training, data security, and security technologies. The Detect function requires monitoring capabilities to identify security events: SIEM tools, EDR, network monitoring, and security scanning. For Miami SMBs, the most important detect controls are endpoint detection and response, email security monitoring, and network anomaly detection — the three most common attack vectors.

NIST CSF: Respond and Recover

Respond means having a plan to act when an incident occurs: your incident response plan, communication procedures, and evidence collection practices. Recover covers restoring normal operations: recovery planning, improvement processes based on lessons learned, and communication with stakeholders. Many Miami businesses focus exclusively on protection and neglect response and recovery planning — leaving them flat-footed when a breach inevitably occurs.
