After the Storm: A Post-Hurricane IT Recovery Checklist for South Florida Businesses

When the storm passes and the power comes back, how you bring your technology back online decides how fast you reopen. Here is the checklist to follow.

The dangerous moment for your technology is not always during the storm, it is often the messy hours after, when power flickers back, equipment restarts, and everyone rushes to reopen. Bring things back in the wrong order and you can corrupt data, miss damage, or expose systems that came up without their protections. A simple recovery checklist turns a chaotic morning into a calm sequence.

Power Back On, Carefully

Dirty power and surges during recovery can do more harm than the outage itself. Bring equipment back up in order: confirm clean power and surge protection, then network gear, then servers, then workstations. Give each layer a moment to come fully online before the next, and watch for anything that does not power up normally.

Verify Data and Backups Before You Trust Them

Once systems are up, do not assume the data survived intact. Confirm that your latest backup completed and is restorable, check that critical files open correctly, and look for any process that was mid-write when the power dropped. This is the moment your tested backups earn their keep, or reveal that they were never really tested.

What to do: Work the list in order. Confirm clean power, restore network then servers then workstations, verify the latest backup is good, test that key files open, and confirm security tools are running before reconnecting to the internet.

Do Not Reopen With Your Guard Down

Systems that reboot after an outage sometimes come back with security software disabled or updates pending, which is exactly when attackers probe. Confirm endpoint protection, firewalls, and MFA are active before you resume business as usual.
