As small businesses add AI chatbots and assistants, a new class of attack comes with them. Here is what prompt injection is and how to defend against it.

More small businesses are adding AI chatbots to their websites and AI assistants to their internal tools. These can be genuinely useful, but they introduce a new category of risk that traditional security tools were not built for. The most important one to understand is prompt injection, and a little awareness goes a long way toward using these tools safely.

What Prompt Injection Actually Is

Prompt injection is when someone feeds an AI system instructions hidden inside ordinary-looking input, tricking it into ignoring its original rules. A support chatbot might be coaxed into revealing information it should not, or an assistant that reads emails might be manipulated by instructions buried in a message. The attack works because these systems struggle to tell the difference between data and commands.

Why It Matters for Small Businesses

The risk grows with what the AI can access or do. A chatbot that only answers general questions is low risk. An assistant that can read your files, send emails, or take actions on your behalf is a much bigger concern, because a successful injection could turn your own helpful tool against you. The more power you give an AI agent, the more carefully it needs to be contained.

Treat anything an AI agent can do on its own as if a stranger might trigger it. If you would not let an unknown person perform an action unsupervised, do not let an AI do it unsupervised either.

Practical Ways to Reduce the Risk

Limit what each AI tool can access to only what it needs. Keep a human approval step for anything sensitive, such as sending money or sharing data. Choose vendors that take these risks seriously and can explain their safeguards. And never rely on an AI system alone to enforce your security rules, because it can be talked out of them.

AI tools are worth adopting, but they deserve the same careful thinking you apply to any system that touches your data. We help South Florida businesses adopt AI assistants and chatbots in a way that captures the benefit without opening a new door for attackers.
