Step-by-step guide to migrating your Miami business from landlines to VoIP. Port your numbers, train your team, and avoid common pitfalls.

Migrating from a traditional phone system to VoIP is one of the most impactful technology transitions Miami businesses can make for cost savings and communication quality. But the migration requires careful planning — especially the number porting process, which can be stressful if not managed properly. This guide walks through the migration process from planning through go-live.

Planning Your VoIP Migration

A successful VoIP migration starts with: inventorying all your current phone numbers and lines (which ones must be ported, which can be abandoned); verifying that your internet connection is suitable for VoIP (bandwidth, latency, and packet loss testing); selecting your VoIP provider based on features, pricing, and reliability; deciding on your hardware (IP phones, headsets, mobile apps); planning your call flow and auto-attendant configuration; and setting an implementation timeline that avoids your busiest business periods.

Number Porting: The Critical Path

Porting your business phone numbers from your old carrier to your new VoIP provider is often the longest step and the one most prone to delays. In Miami, the standard porting timeline is 2-4 weeks for most local numbers. Start the porting process as early as possible. Do not cancel your old service before porting is complete — once a number is cancelled at the carrier level, it can be very difficult or impossible to recover. Infinity Network Support manages number porting for all our Miami VoIP implementations.

Go-Live and Post-Migration Support

Plan your go-live for a low-activity day (often a Friday or weekend for Miami businesses). Have your IT provider or MSP on hand during cutover. Test all extensions, auto-attendants, ring groups, and voicemail before the old service is disconnected. Brief your team on the new system before go-live day and provide quick-reference guides for common tasks (transferring calls, checking voicemail, using the mobile app). Most employees adapt to VoIP within a week when properly supported.
