Next-Gen Firewall &
Zero-Trust Network Access

INS configured next-generation firewalls with ZTNA across OwnMidwest's distributed offices and remote workforce in Indiana and South Carolina — network access segmented by role, device, and location, with intrusion detection running 24/7 under INS NOC oversight.

The Challenge

OwnMidwest's distributed workforce spans offices in Indiana and South Carolina, with remote employees accessing critical systems from home networks and mobile devices. Legacy firewall configurations provided perimeter protection but no visibility into east-west traffic — meaning that once an attacker was inside the network, they could move freely between systems and business lines.

Remote access was handled through traditional VPN — granting broad network access to any authenticated user regardless of device health or access context. With sensitive financial data and property records accessible across all three business lines, OwnMidwest needed a network security architecture that enforced least-privilege access and stopped lateral movement before it could cause damage.

The INS Solution

INS replaced OwnMidwest's legacy firewall infrastructure with next-generation firewalls at all locations — providing deep packet inspection, application-layer visibility, and integrated IDS/IPS across all network traffic. The NGFW deployment gave the INS NOC a unified view of all network activity across Indiana and South Carolina.

Zero-trust network access was implemented to replace the legacy VPN — enforcing identity verification, device health checks, and context-aware access policies before granting any user access to any resource. Access is segmented by role and business line: a PTI Services employee cannot access Caddis Real Estate systems, and vice versa.

Micro-segmentation was configured across all OwnMidwest locations — dividing the network into isolated zones that prevent lateral movement between systems and business lines. IDS/IPS signatures are tuned to OwnMidwest's traffic profile and monitored 24/7 by the INS NOC, with automated alerting on any anomalous east-west traffic patterns.

Results

Micro-Segmentation Across All Locations

All OwnMidwest sites and business lines are now micro-segmented — a breach in one entity cannot spread to the others.

Lateral Movement Eliminated

Zero lateral movement events since NGFW and micro-segmentation deployment — attackers have no path between business line environments.

Remote Access Secured Without VPN

ZTNA replaced legacy VPN — remote employees get least-privilege access based on identity and device health, not broad network access.

24/7 IDS/IPS Coverage

Intrusion detection runs continuously across all OwnMidwest network traffic, monitored by the INS NOC around the clock.
